Ryan Roth of Cambridge, Ont., won the men’s road race title at the Canadian national road cycling championships on Saturday. Roth outsprinted Tour de France professional Michael Barry of Toronto in the 180 kilometre race with a time of four hours 35 minutes 21 seconds. Marsh Cooper of Aldergrove, B.C., finished third in the sprint.
Roth, riding for the domestic professional team SpiderTech owned by Steve Bauer, bridged across to the break with Barry late in the race.
Barry, who races for the British professional Sky squad of world champion Mark Cavendish, attacked again, taking Roth and Cooper with him in the winning move.
In the final 300 metres out of the last corner, Roth got the jump.
“It was so tight at the finish line,” said Roth. “I did not even raise my arms for fear of being passed. It’s always hard to do a sprint finish, and I wanted the victory. When the peloton decided to react to catch the breakaway, the tempo became very high with the work of Barry and the other European professionals. When Michael decided to take the lead, I followed him.”
