In 2011, the rims of 4 wheel models (Cosmic Carbone SLR, Comète road, R-Sys SLR, Ksyrium SLR) have received a special treatment. More than just a stealthy grey appearance, Exalith provides added durability and a lighter rim. The treatment deeply penetrates the aluminum, reinforcing it against fatigue and brake track wear. This added reinforcement allows  some weight and inertia reduction, resulting in even more responsiveness, plus incredibly accurate braking performance.

The French magazine Top Velo (March issue - #168) ran a test at a tyre manufacturer lab facility, with 30 different tubulars including Mavic's new Yksion GripLink. The conclusion about it is: "Mavic is entering loudly the tubular world with a very highly performing item (.) the Yksion GripLink shows firm comfort and is excellent when cornering." This product is actually a big contribution to the wheel-tyre systems presented this current year.

Finish Line bike lubricants get environmentally friendly

Brand to use polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles

Finish Line’s premium bicycle lubricants will be packaged in environmentally friendly PET bottles.    

The company believes it is the only manufacturer to offer bicycle lubricants in bottles with the official number one recyclability designation, indicating that they are highly recyclable.

Finish Line's Ceramic WET Lube, Ceramic WAX Lube, DRY Teflon Lube, WET Lubricant, WAX Lubricant and 1-STEP Cleaner Lubricant are all moving to the new bottles. The PET bottles began shipping in late 2010 and the global transition is expected to be complete by Q3 2011.

Finish Line founder Hank Krause said: “The switch to polyethylene terephthalate plastic or ‘PET’ (from #2 High Density Polyethylene or ‘HDPE’) means cyclists can feel comfortable purchasing premium maintenance products without any compromise to their commitment to recycling.”

“These PET bottles compliment Finish Line’s new line of separate-and-recycle PET clam shell packages which we now use for our Chain Cleaners, Grunge Brushes, and other assorted specialty items. These clam shells have allowed us to move away from traditional blisters which are heat sealed to cardboard, and therefore very hard to recycle.”

The glossy PET bottles also offer performance benefits, the firm said – being extremely stable, providing improved barrier permeability, preventing paneling and the loss of product due to evaporation through the walls of bottles.

L'heure du bilan pour Simon Pouliot-Cavanagh

Depuis mon dernier communiqué, j'ai terminé le circuit de la Coupe du Monde avec une 17e position à Voss, en Norvège. J'ai adoré l'expérience, poussé la machine à fond du début jusqu'à la fin ! Mais mon rang de départ pour cette finale en duel n'était pas à mon avantage pour cette dernière Coupe du Monde. J'ai perdu mon premier duel contre un russe, Sergey Volkov, un skieur qui en surpris plus d'un cette journée. Le gagnant de nous deux se retrouvait ensuite pour la 16e position contre le champion du Circuit, Guilbault Colas (France). Même si toute est possible en duel, cela n'offrait pas un chemin facile pour cette compétition ! Mais je suis d'abord très heureux d'avoir accédé à cette finale, alors que seul le top 24 au classement du circuit y était invité et surtout très satisfait de la manière dont j'ai skié durant ces journées.

À cette finale de la coupe du monde, l'Équipe Canadienne a remporté une fois de plus la «Nation Cup», pour le pays ayant accumulé le plus de points sur le circuit. L'Équipe est très forte et nous avons d'ailleurs eu beaucoup de compétitions entre coéquipiers toute au long de l'hiver.

Je suis ensuite revenu au Québec pour conclure la saison avec le Championnat Canadien qui s'est tenu le 25 et 27 mars dernier à Val-Saint-Côme. Je termine du bon pied en montant sur la 3ième marche du podium à deux reprises. Ce sont mes premières médailles pour cet évènement, l'an dernier ayant terminé deux fois au 7e rang à Calgary.

Mon bilan pour une première année avec l'équipe Nationale : Je termine au 19e rang au classement de la Coupe du Monde à mon entrée sur le circuit, avec un total de cinq départs. J'y aurai accumulé deux 5e places, soit à Calgary et en Suède, une 10e à Mont-Gabriel ainsi qu'une 4e en qualification en Suède. J'ai aussi gagné mes premières médailles sur le circuit NorAm, une médaille d'or et trois de bronzes pour terminer en 3e position au classement de ce circuit.

Ces résultats me sont réjouissants, au début de la saison je visais qu'à faire des podiums sur le circuit NorAm, et peut-être faire une finale en participant à une Coupe du Monde, alors que suite à mes premiers résultats, j'ai eu l'occasion de finir la saison sur ce circuit et d'y faire des tops 5. Je compte m'y faire une place pour l'an prochain !

Il y a un an déjà, j'écrivais un message pour annoncer mon entrée sur l'Équipe Nationale, me voilà à la fin d'une super saison ! Je tiens à vous remercier de votre support, vous qui m'avez suivi et encouragé toute au long de la saison. Merci à mes commanditaires qui me permettent de performer avec de l'équipement de qualité ! C'est toujours très motivant de savoir qu'on a une équipe derrière et qui croit en vous !

Je suis maintenant en vacances pour le prochain mois. Je vais profiter de ce moment à Québec pour me reposer, passer du temps à la maison et bien sûr, commencer à planifier la prochaine saison ! L'entraînement avec l'Équipe reprendra dans l'ouest Canadien au début mai pour un autre été qui s'annonce bien rempli !

Prototype de roue Mavic pour Paris-Roubaix

Mavic a procédé à l'essai de nouveaux prototypes de roues en carbone à boyau de 40 mm de profil avec ses coureurs de premier plan ce printemps.

Ces roues ont été vu sur les vélos de Thor Hushovd et Roger Hammond de l'Équipe Garmin-Cervélo à l'Omloop Het Nieuwsblad ainsi que sur celui de Phillipe Gilbert d'Omega Pharma Lotto qui les a roulées vers la victoire à la Strade Bianche, et Jurgen Roelandts les a utilisées pour s'emparer d'un place sur le podium à l'E3 Harelbeke.

Les roues sont connues sous le nom de M40 et la version aperçue jusqu'à maintenant utilise 24 rayons en acier montés sur un moyeu à flancs bas différents de ceux qu'utilise Mavic  présentement. La M40 utilise des jantes larges continuant une tendance qui s'installe depuis quelques années déjà. Elle aura comme concurrente les Zipp 303 et les Hed Stinger 4 notamment.

Hushovd et le reste de l'Équipe Garmin-Cervélo lui feront subir le test ultime lors de Paris-Roubaix, où les roues seront lancé officiellement puisque l'on a déjà pu les voir lors du Tour des Flandres dimanche dernier.

K-Swiss Announces First-Ever $1M Triathletes Challenge

K-Swiss's CEO Steve Nichols has pledged to award $1 million to brothers Andreas and Michael Raelert if they reach their goal of finishing first and second at the Ironman World Championship on October 8, 2011. The bonus would mark the largest sum ever awarded in the competition's 33-year history, putting the payout in the range of such prestigious events as both Wimbledon and the Masters.

The event Kona, Hawaii covers a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run.

The German-born Raelert brothers, just four years apart in age, currently stand as two of the world's leading triathletes. Both are reigning champions: Michael is the back-to-back 2009 and 2010 Ironman 70.3 World Champion and Andreas is the 2010 Ironman European Champion. However, Michael has never raced in Kona, or any race Andreas has entered out of admiration for his older brother. Inspired by this kinship and dedication that defines the sport of triathlon, K-Swiss is pledging to help push the envelope in the sport by launching this once-in-a-lifetime challenge to reward the athleticism and drive that is relatively unrecognized in the sports world.

"Last year at Kona, I asked Michael why he wasn't competing. I was moved by his response - that ever since he was a child, his brother Andreas has been his hero, and he couldn't race against him," said Steven Nichols, CEO of K-Swiss. "Michael said that the only way he would compete against Andreas was if they finished in unison. This really shows the world what the triathlon community is all about - we hope to meet them at the finish line in Kona with a check in hand to award that dedication."

Through a grassroots effort, the company aims to raise awareness for the sport of triathlon and its passionate community of athletes. The Ironman series is an unparalleled endurance event in which athletes must complete a 140.6-mile grueling course: a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run. Throughout Ironman's summer season, the brothers will race in competitions forging their way to the World Championships in Kona.

"We feel that the most grueling one-day sporting event in the world deserves more attention than it has," said Erik Vervloet, K-Swiss vice president of sports marketing. "Kona is nearly impossible to win on your own, but two brothers accomplishing this together would be a game-changing moment for the sport of triathlon."
