Spidertech: Roth National Champion

Ryan Roth of Cambridge, Ont., won the men’s road race title at the Canadian national road cycling championships on Saturday. Roth outsprinted Tour de France professional Michael Barry of Toronto in the 180 kilometre race with a time of four hours 35 minutes 21 seconds. Marsh Cooper of Aldergrove, B.C., finished third in the sprint.

Roth, riding for the domestic professional team SpiderTech owned by Steve Bauer, bridged across to the break with Barry late in the race. Barry, who races for the British professional Sky squad of world champion Mark Cavendish, attacked again, taking Roth and Cooper with him in the winning move. 

In the final 300 metres out of the last corner, Roth got the jump. “It was so tight at the finish line,” said Roth. “I did not even raise my arms for fear of being passed. It’s always hard to do a sprint finish, and I wanted the victory. When the peloton decided to react to catch the breakaway, the tempo became very high with the work of Barry and the other European professionals. When Michael decided to take the lead, I followed him.”

Andréanne just won the big one!!! U23 Canadian Champion! 

Congratulations go to her for all her hard work over the years and sticking with it. Andréanne has been part of the Opus family for years and we're extremely proud of her.

Race recap :  Andréanne had a 30 second lead when disaster struck and her chain broke ! Thankfully Olivier Laprade was in the zone and got her back rolling in record time. She dropped to 7th place with the broken chain and managed to climb back up to the lead to take the win !

Frédérique Larose-Gingras had a hard fought race and was able to take the 3rd spot in Junior women's!!! Congratulations! This gets her an invite to go to the Worlds in St-Anne as well as the one in Windham.

Mathieu Belanger-Barrette had a great race as well coming in 10th in senior elite during a hard fought race.

Guillaume Larose-Gingras managed to get a 4th place finish in Men's Junior, being probably the only Junior in Canada that would be disappointed with a 4th. He can console himself by knowing he is the overall series Junior Champion for the Canada Cups!!!

Steven Noble got a great 6th place finish in U23 men's and Daniel Varga was close behind with an 11th place. Congratulations to both of them!!!

Alex Frappier managed to get a 11th place in Masters elite during a hard fought race.

It's been a bit of a slow start to the summer weather wise but my M9 has been hot all season!  I can't believe how amazing it feels on every single course that I've ridden so far.  My most recent race was Canada Cup #2 in Bromont, a very fun course that I've done a couple times before.  I spent a fair amount of time reflecting on the weekend afterwards and put those thoughts into my Canadian DH Girls blog which you can read here.

This is my "I crashed a lot" look!

I'm just home again from a trip back out east, this time to Toronto.  After coming home from Bromont I found out I'd made the cut from an audition I'd done a week prior so spent a week in Toronto doing some filming for a commercial.  Thankfully I got to ride my bike for it, so although the trails there were not quite like the ones at home it was still fun to be out there riding my bike! The commercial isn't due to come out till October but I'll be sure to let you know when it does!

Now that I'm home I'm getting ready for a 2 week trip to Panorama for Nationals and the final Canada Cup race.

Thanks for all your support so far this season!  My new helmet is great, and my gloves, stem and bars have been holding out perfectly!

Kevin Sandau - End of season

Well the ski season is all said and done. The end of March consisted of lots of racing action, with the Canadian National Championships in Canmore, and the US Super Tour in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Having this years Nationals on home turf was a great advantage. After the back and forth travelling from Europe and Canada in January and February, it was a nice break to be able to stay at home and prepare for these races.

The big goal for the week was to bring home my first ever medal from a Canadian Championship, something that has eluded me for the past seven years. Last year in Whitehorse I came close with a 5th place finish, but after some very strong results earlier this season I was confident I could finally walk on to the podium.

The 10km skate race was the first race of four and perhaps one of my favourites. Although a bit shorter than what I prefer, the course was hard enough to make up some good time. After everyone crossed the finish, I ended up 3rd, and just 20 seconds from the top. Other highlights from the week was my 3rd place finish in the 50km, after which the season usually comes to an end, but not this year. I packed up my things one last time and drove down to Sun Valley for the US Nationals 50km, and the Super Tour Finals.

Surprisingly my body wasn't feeling too bagged from the 50km in Canmore, and the 50km across the border went very well. After having to fight back up to the front mid-way through the race, and then fighting to hang on with the leader, I finished 2nd. In the Super Tour, I finished 3rd in the 15km individual day, and placed 8th overall after all four races.

Now that it's April, it's time to relax and enjoy some sun. Training starts back up in early May, so I have to cram in as much relaxation as possible! Thanks for the support over the past years, I really appreciate it, and hope to continue it next season.
