EASTON CYCLING presents: AGGY's NZ ADVENTURE

Graham Agassiz is joined by a motley crew of characters, including 10-time DH world champion, Frenchman Nicolas Vouilloz; and world cup DH stars Sam Blenkinsop and Cameron Cole. We hit some of the South Island's best destinations including Nelson and Christchurch, we did some downhilling, some trail riding and built some slopestyle-sized booters.

Les Larose-Gingras continuent sur leur lancée

La deuxième Coupe Canada de vélo de montagne a pris place le week-end dernier à Baie Saint-Paul (Québec) et encore une fois l'équipe Opus était présente et a couru en force. 

Les  frères et soeurs Guillaume Larose-Gingras et Frédérique Larose-Gingras ont commencé la journée avec une place sur le podium dans leur catégorie respective, Guillaume s'appropriant la victoire dans la catégorie cadet homme sur son Opus Prime 29er. De son côté, Frédérique a roulé une solide course vers la troisième position dans la catégorie junior femme sur son Opus Fhast 1 29er. 

La plus jeune de la famille Larose-Gingras, Mireille (Club Subway/Génétik), a aussi bien fait de son côté en terminant en première position dans la catégorie pee-wee sur son Opus Fhast 1. 

Chez les élites femmes, la coureuse Opus Andréanne Pichette a eu deux solides premiers  tours sur son Opus Fhast 1 29 pouces avant de voir son rythme de croisière diminuer, mais elle s’en sort tout de même avec une respectable 15ième place. La talentueuse coureuse dans la catégorie des moins de 23 ans était toujours en train de récupérer de son voyage en Europe du week-end précédent où elle termina en 11ième position à la Coupe du monde de La Bresse, France. Selon Pichette: « Je sais que je suis capable de beaucoup mieux,  chaque course nous permet d’en apprendre plus sur nous-mêmes, j’ai hâte à la prochaine course.» 

Les élites hommes ont bien performés dans leur catégorie, avec Steven Noble finissant en 21ième position et Mathieu Bélanger-Barette le suivant immédiatement en 22ième et Daniel Varga complète le trio en 23ième position dans un peloton compétitif de 52 coureurs.

Trois fois champion québécois chez les maîtres, Alex Frappier, a livré une dure bataille dans la catégorie maître expert et termina avec une solide 5ième position sur son Opus Fhast 1 29er. 

L’équipe Opus de vélo de montagne voyagera à Hardwood Hills, Ontario le week-end prochain pour la Coupe Canada #3 du 2 au 3 juin, si vous êtes dans le coin venez encourager nos coureurs !

Podium Streak continues for Larose-Gingras family

Round #2 of the Canada Cup mountain bike championships took place this past weekend in Baie St. Paul, Quebec, and once again the Opus mountain bike team was there racing in full force. 

The Opus sponsored brother-sister duo of Guillaume Larose-Gingras and Frédérique Larose-Gingras started off the day with podium finishes in their categories, with Guillaume taking the victory in the in the Cadet men’s category aboard his Opus Prime 29er, while Frédérique rode to a very solid third place finish in the Junior women’s category on her Opus Fhast 1. 

The youngest of the Larose-Gingras family, Mireille (racing for Club Subway/Génétik), also enjoyed a strong race taking home a strong first place finish in the PeeWee category aboard her Opus Fhast 1. 

In the Elite Women’s category, Opus rider Andréanne Pichette had a solid first two laps aboard her Opus Fhast 29er before she started to fade but still managed a respectable 15th place finish. The talented U23 rider was still recovering from her travel to Europe the previous weekend where she finished in 11th position at the World Cup Championships in La Bresse, France. According to Pichette, « I know I can do much better, but every race is a learning experience and I’m looking forward to the next race. » 

The Opus Elite Men performed well in their category, with Steven Noble finishing in 21st position and Mathieu Belanger Barrette following immediately in 22nd and Daniel Varga rounding out the trio in 23rd position in a competitive field of 52 riders. 

Three-time Quebec Masters champion Alex Frappier had a hard fought battle in the Masters Expert category and finished in a solid 5th place position aboard his Opus Fhast 29er. 

The Opus mountain bike team travels to Hardwood Hills, Ontario next weekend for Round #3 of the Canada Cup series from June 2-3, if you’re in the area make sure to stop by and cheer on the riders.

Hesjedal wins Giro d'Italia!

Ryder Hesjedal of the Garmin-Barracuda team became the first Canadian winner of the Giro d’Italia. He used the time trial on the last stage to overtake Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha). These two cyclists rose to the top of the peloton over the course of the three week race, but Hesjedal’s superior TT ability sealed his historic victory. On the final classification, the Garmin rider was just 16 seconds ahead of Rodriguez.

Athletes on Mavic-sponsored teams shone during the entire three week race through Italy. The Garmin team won the team time trial, beating Katusha by just a handful of seconds. From this point onward, Hesjedal and Rodriguez were locked in a tight battle for the pink jersey. Ivan Basso of the Liquigas-Cannondale team also moved within striking distance. On one stage, these three riders finished 1-2-3 for a complete podium sweep, and they spent several days as the top three on GC.

In the end, Mavic teams won 4 stages, wore the pink jersey for 12 days, and finished in first, second, and fifth (Ivan Basso) on the overall final GC. Way to go guys!

Giro d'Italia: Pinotti wins final stage

Hesjedal finished sixth in the 28.2km Milan test, which was won by Marco Pinotti (BMC Racing), ahead of Sky’s Geraint Thomas and RadioShack’s Jesse Sergent.

Lampre - ISD wins Fast Team classification at Giro d'Italia. The Lampre - ISD team is riding on Vittoria tubular and clincher tyres. 




7th US Pro Time Trial Title for Z-boy!

A typical hot, humid day greeted the 35 racers contesting the US Professional Time Trial Championships in Greenville, South Carolina. Held on a clover shaped loop ridden three times, the field faced 33 kilometers under the sun.

Setting the fastest time through all three loops on the CU-ICAR campus, David Zabriskie (Garmin-Barracuda) took his seventh professional time trial championship with a time of 40:41:44. In second place was Tejay van Garderen (BMC Racing Team) at 40:47:90 and in third was teammate Brent Bookwalter at 41:08:06.

Tim Duggan (Liquigas-Cannondale) captured the USA Cycling Professional Road Race after attacking out of group of five in the closing smaller circuits of downtown Greenville, South Carolina.

Absalon triumphant at La Bresse XCO

Orbea's Julien Absalon scored his 25th UCI XC World Cup victory in front of a home crowd in La Bresse, France. This 4th round of the 2012 World Cup season was located 30km from Absalon's home and he was pleased to have a strong result.

Absalon told the website Cyclingnews, "It is maybe one of my best races. It's been in my mind forever - the first world cup at home is a lot of pressure, and I'm happy."

Powerful performance in California

Riders on Mavic wheels are winning races on 2 continents! Peter Sagan (Liquigas) won the first 3 stages of the Tour of California and holds the leader's jersey. In the Giro d'Italia, Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda) wore pink for 4 days before Joaqim Rodriguez (Katusha) took it on stage 9. Good job to all these Mavic pro teams!

The Tour of California was successful on many levels for riders on Mavic wheels. The Liquigas-Cannondale and Garmin-Barracuda teams dominated the stage victories and overall classification. Riders from these teams won a total of 5 of the 7 stages.

Peter Sagan with the Liquigas team won a record 4 stages, including 3 in a row to open the week. He wore the overall leader's jersey for 4 days. Dave Zabriskie with the Garmin team dominated the time trial and took the leader's jersey for 2 days.

In the final ranking, Liquigas-Cannondale was the number one team. And Garmin-Barracuda had riders in second and third on the overall general classification.

Mont-Tremblant Canada Cup

Intense Canada 2012 Team Roster Announced

Montreal, Quebec, 12 April, 2012- Outdoor Gear Canada (OGC) is proud to announce the roster for the Intense Canada downhill mountain bike team. The four-rider team from 2011 is returning for 2012 and is looking forward to building on its 2011 momentum.

Intense Canada riders will be racing on the Canadian national downhill mountain bike race circuit, in provincially sanctioned races and in select international races. This team of young riders has some impressive experience including that of Danice Uyesugi who took third place overall in the Canada Cup Series for Pro/Elite women in 2011.

Vaea Verbeeck returns to racing after her promising 2011 season was ended prematurely due to injury. Vaea is excited to be back on her bike again and is looking to build on her 2010 success when she won the Bromont Canada Cup. Vaea is now racing in the Senior Elite category

On the men’s side, Intense Canada riders Matt Beer and Dexter Robson are both keen to start racing this year and to build on their experience acquired in 2011. Matt brings with him seven years of racing and will compete in the Pro/Elite category this year. This will be Dexter’s first year racing in the Pro/Elite category and he is excited to get the season started.

According to OGC Marketing Manager, Sylvain Bossé, “We’re excited to see all four talented riders returning for 2012 and we anticipate a strong season from the Intense Canada downhill team.”

Révélation de l'équipe de descente : Intense Canada 2012

Montréal, Québec, le 12 avril 2012-  Outdoor Gear Canada (OGC) est fier d’annoncer les coureurs de son équipe de descente Intense Canada. L’équipe 2011 étant formée de 4 coureurs sera de retour en 2012. Les membres de l'équipe sont chargés à bloc et ne s'attendent qu'à surpasser la saison précédente.

L’équipe Intense Canada sera aperçue sur le circuit national et provincial ainsi qu’à certains événements internationaux. La jeunesse de l'équipe n'a pas empêché Danice Uyesugi de s'emparer du troisième rang au cumulatif de la série coupe Canada pour la catégorie élite en 2011.

Vaea Verbeeck, celle qui avait connu un grand succès en 2010, gagnantes de la coupe Canada à Bromont, reviendra en force suite à une fâcheuse blessure qui avait prématurément compromis sa saison 2011. Elle est présentement au sommet de sa forme et motivée pour son retour sur le circuit. Vaea prendra le départ dans la catégorie élite cette année.

Chez les hommes, les coureurs de l’équipe Intense Canada seront Matt Beer et Dexter Robson tous excités à l'idée de commencer la saison 2012. Matt a comme bagage, 7 ans d’expérience sur le circuit et participera aux courses de la catégorie élite cet été. Pour Dexter, ce sera sa première saison en tant qu’élite et il n'attend qu'à rivaliser avec les meilleurs coureurs Canadiens.

En accord avec le directeur marketing, Sylvain Bossé; « Nous sommes très heureux de voir ces talentueux athlètes de retour en 2012 et nous anticipons une excellente saison pour l’équipe de descente Intense Canada.»

News from Matt Macduff

I just got back from Europe last week and it was unreal, I started my trip with the Vienna Air King were I qualified 7th, but unfortunately I fell during practice on Sunday hitting my nuts really bad, and wrecking my back wheel. Fortunately, it was nothing serious and I was back on the bike a week later, and filmed this video with friends:


Then I was off to Switzerland for the Rivella Rocket Air Slopestyle. Unfortunately, I ran into some bad luck again and fell during practice hurting my ankle pretty bad. But I toughed it out and rode the pre Q. I qualified 7th again but when I woke up the next morning my ankle hurt so bad there was just no way I could have road on it, so I was forced to watch from the side lines again...



Then I was off to Barcelona to work on a special web project for The Rise which will be out later this year.

All in all the trip was great, I met loads of new people, got invited to more events, and rode some amazing places.

Another great weekend for Opus bikes

Congratulations to Andréanne Pichette for coming in 11th at the World Cup in La Bresse!  Great race on a rough track, Andréanne is having an amazing season and we're sure it'll keep going now that she's coming back to home turf.

It was the first XC Canada Cup this weekend in Tremblant and the Opus team was there in force. Frédérique and Guillaume Larose-Gingras both got a 3rd place in their categories and their little sister, Mireille, although not on the Opus team, won her category on her very own Opus Fhast.

The Opus tech zone was packed all weekend and Olivier did a great job in keeping all the bikes in check for both the Opus and Intense team riders.

Great job also for Steven N., Daniel V., Alex F. and Mathieu B. who each had a great race in the gruelling sun on Saturday.

Boivin 10e de la dernière étape en Californie

(Los Angeles, CA – Le 20 mai 2012)

Après 1180 kilomètres de course, le Tour de Californie Amgen 2012 est terminé. La huitième étape du tour était de seulement 68 kilomètres de course, partant de Beverly Hills et se terminant à Los Angeles, au LA Live. Des dizaines de milliers de spectateurs étaient tout le long du parcours et à l’aire d’arrivée.

L’équipe SpiderTech a connu de bonnes performances à cette édition, un tour qui a été illustré par l’intense lutte pour le maillot du roi de la montagne. David Boily tentait de défendre le maillot remporté l’an dernier par son coéquipier Pat McCarty. Boily a pris possession du maillot dès l’étape d’ouverture, un maillot qu’il a détenu pendant deux jours. Boily est demeuré dans la course pour le maillot jusqu’à l’avant-dernière étape, celle de l’ascension du Mount Baldy.

Revenant d’une blessure au poignet subite au Tour de la Turquie, Guillaume Boivin a affiché deux résultats parmi le Top 10, terminant septième lors de la quatrième étape et dixième dans la dernière étape.

Brian Vandborg eut une bonne course au classement général. Vandborg prend la 22e place du classement général, ce qui prouve que sa forme est revenue après avoir rejoint l’équipe à mi-chemin de la saison.

Peter Sagan de l’équipe Liquigas-Cannondale a remporté cette dernière étape, qui s’est terminée en un sprint du peloton, remportant ainsi sa quatrième victoire de la semaine. Guillaume Boivin a, quant à lui, sprinté au 10e rang, son deuxième Top 10 de la semaine.

Robert Gesink de Rabobank Cycling Team a remporté le classement général, après une spectaculaire montée du Mont Baldy, hier. Gesink est devenu le deuxième cycliste non américain à remporter le Tour de Californie.

La prochaine course de l’équipe SpiderTech sera le Tour du Luxembourg, se préparant pour le plus grand test de l’histoire de l’équipe, le Tour de Suisse, une épreuve du WorldTour.

Testés pour vous: les antivols

« Ce n’est pas une question de minutes, mais plutôt de secondes », nous ont confirmé tous les pros du vol de vélo. Forts de ce constat, nous avons décidé de tester un certain nombre de produits antivol chrono en main. Comme les photos ci-contre le montrent, ce test s’est fait en hiver. Pour procéder, nous avons choisi les outils les plus couramment utilisés par les voleurs, outils généralement accessibles et peu coûteux. Nous avions aussi plusieurs exemplaires de chaque cadenas afin de valider qu’ils n’étaient pas affaiblis par nos attaques précédentes avec un autre outil. Enfin, nous n’avons pas tenté le crochetage de serrure (méthode plutôt rare) ni l’utilisation d’acide ou d’azote liquide (qui relève plutôt du mythe urbain) pas plus que d’outils électriques comme une scie circulaire. Bref, ce test a été fait en atelier et à l’extérieur avec des moyens simples. Nous ne sommes pas des voleurs professionnels, donc nous ne sommes pas des experts dans le maniement des outils. Avec l’expérience, le temps qu’il faut pour briser ces cadenas pourrait être réduit. Dernier point: ce test a été fait en partenariat avec le magazine Protégez-vous, histoire de partager notre expertise en matière de test. Lourd et cher, mais incontestablement le maillot jaune de nos tests. Le Kryptonite vaut une bonne police d'assurance. Très solide et bien fait, il a repoussé tous nos assauts, quel que soit l'outil utilisé.

Très lourde et difficile à transporter, mais votre vélo ne bougera pas. Tous nos efforts ont été inutiles : quel que soit l'outil utilisé, nous n'avons pas pu entamer l'acier trempé de la chaîne. Utile quand vous attachez votre vélo toujours au même endroit.
