Full Steam Ahead

My summer training season is in full swing, and after a month's rest in April, it's nice to get back into the groove of training. Things started off summer with a short three night-camp to Kaslo, BC, with the Alberta World Cup Academy. Similar to my last camp a year ago in New Denver, training here encompassed the long 216km Silver Triangle road ride. This route starts from Kaslo, over the pass to New Denver, then on to Nelson and finally back to where we started. This sort of workout makes you really appreciate the support  given by the coaches who where there to fill up bottles, feed us some gels and be there incase of the odd mechanical problem. With the help of a couple extra guys to spread out the pulls, this year's ride was 30 minutes quicker than last time around, and my legs were thankful for that!

Myself at the far side starting off our ride. Only six and half hours to go!

The watch says it all: it doesn't take much to fall asleep after a workout like this.

Other than riding, we did a couple roller ski workouts out towards New Denver on some of the quietest and smoothest roads around (which is a rare occurrence for roller skiing). After some serious training hours clocked in, the camp was over as soon as it started.

Beautiful British Columbia as usual. This was the destination on my roller ski workouts.

Training didn't really slow down after that. Marking my second year on the National Ski Team, the World Cup and Senior Development teams joined together in a short, two night camp up on the Haig Glacier. Because of the more than usual amounts of snow in the mountains, we flew up in a helicopter rather than running in. Here the camp focus was some long on-snow workouts to keep the technique tuned up and using the 2650m elevation to our bodies advantage. It was pretty incredible how noticeable the change in altitude was, going from the parking lot at 1600m to jumping on skis more than 1000m higher took a couple minutes getting used to.

No complaints! The 8 minute flight from the road saved us from doing a snowy and slow three hour + run/hike into camp.

Not much in the way of clouds as we flew into the glacier. The view from the helicopter shows the 4.25km track groomed out in the distance.

This is the most snow I've ever seen up here in the summer. Taken right outside the camp huts, there normally wouldn't be snow in the lower half of this photo...

...but that made for some awesome skiing, which made long workouts like this one fly-by.

After a couple days of perfect weather, our luck ran out and we were greeted with hail and an absurd amount of wind on our last day. Because of the wind gusts and poor visibility, the helicopter that had planned to pick us up couldn't take off from Canmore, leaving us with the run out as our only option to return to civilization. After a snowy trek back to the parking lot, and the misfortune of our team van running out of gas (nothing was really going for us that day) we finally made it back home, and I successfully ended a five-week training block alive.

Things are slowing down a bit now, with a week to rest up and then back into a long block of training. The new 2011/2012 line up of CamelBaks looks pretty badass and I can't wait to get a hold of some. When would be a good time to email a wish list in regards to winter budgets and such?

Enjoy the summer!

Performer taking his bike to new extremes

For the past several years, Trevor Bodogh has been a familiar sight at the Rockpile in downtown St. Catharines.

The 25-year-old St. Catharines resident has spent countless hours riding his custom bicycle up, over and on the rocks at the busy city intersection.

"I remember progressing from the three little stairs there and then it was 'I was going to try these rocks. At the Rockpile, you would get all these people going by the corner there hooting and hollering," the graduate of Lakeport and Sheridan College said.

The nephew of world champion curler Marilyn Bodogh and accomplished amateur golfer Bernie Bodogh is in the process of trying to make a go of a career as an extreme cyclist. He has done bike shows and bike races and is hoping to be a busker in Niagara-on-the-Lake this summer.

"It's my passion. I don't know if this is possible to this for a living, but this is what I'm trying to do. People call it extreme cycling or reversing gravity. I get all sorts of great comments from people so I've picked up those names from the comments."

He lives at home with his mother Louise and is looking for corporate sponsors and more events to perform at. He has already travelled across North America doing corporate events.
"The door has just cracked open for this," said Bodogh, who is also trying to incorporate motivational speaking into his appearances.

He and a few friends took up the sport before the internet was able to provide a unlimited supply of information, contacts and YouTube clips.

"It was trial and error for a lot of years," he said.
He tried BMX bike racing and mountain bike racing and was a top-ranked junior squash player before he gave it all up because he loved jumping his bike.

"I like doing these extreme feats that combine your body, mind and bike together to create this wow factor."

That wow factor doesn't come without a lot of hard work.

"You have to train your mind and your body as well. If you're riding your bike on platforms and you are very high in the air, you have to have the confidence to see yourself doing it and also be able to know where your limits are. You can also get into some sticky situations and you don't want to do that in front of 2,000 people."

He trains countless hours on his $3,500 bike, going over and on top off of obstacles, platforms and balance beams.

"You're on the back wheel of the bike a lot and it's technical bike handling. I try to train a lot harder than I ever have to ride."

It requires physical ability, athleticism, a strong mind and the ability to not back down.

"It's basically problem solving. You have to figure out your skill set and power and the best way to get up there."

Central in Bodogh's quest to be an extreme cyclist is his father Gerard Bodogh, who committed suicide in 2008.

"I think about him every minute and every full moon there is. I'm sure there's hundreds of other people out there going through the same thing and they don't know how to channel it into something more positive. I come out to train and I focus and think about my dad. It gets me down but it gets me up at the same time because I know he was so pumped for where I was going in life."

It was a challenge for him to overcome his father's death, which occurred in the middle of Bodogh's second-year college exams.

"It sort of derailed me for a little bit. He was gone and it made me refocus on a lot of things and look at how I can turn this into something else for other people that are maybe struggling with it. It's using my extreme (cycling) ability to gather people and talk about my experiences. That's a huge ambition of mine to work with the schools in Niagara and talk to some of the at-risk kids."

Talking about his father has been part of the healing process.

"It has me a lot more open to people when I'm taking about it. There's nothing to hide. It's the experience of life. There ups and downs, peaks and valleys and good and bad. You have to average it out and make positive things come from it."

Tour de France - Garmin-Cervelo wins Tour TTT

By winning the team time trial on stage two in the 2011 Tour de France, the Garmin-Cervelo team achieved one of their biggest goals of the year. This hard-fought win required perfect planning and preparation by both the athletes and staff. Choice in materials is also critical, and close work between the team, Cervelo, and Mavic has resulted in cutting-edge wheels which the riders used to maximum effect.

Helmetcam Film Festival Winning Films

The inaugural GoPro/Giro Helmetcam Film Festival at the Trips for Kids Vancouver’s annual Downbeat Fundraiser Event was an epic mix of mountain bike, surf and ski videos. A big thanks goes out to The North Face, GoPro, Giro, Pinkbike and the Georgia Straight for contributing to the success of this first time show. We will be building on this success and believe that this is a great concept to carry forward next year. Also a big thanks to Sterling Lorence for donating his slide show on his trip to Iceland for our audience.

The winning submission was “Kill Shots, Face Shots, Money Shots” by Lars Andrews. His video featured killer helmet and pole cam POV angles with some of the more epic deep pow and steep lines we’ve seen in a while. Lars takes home a new GoPro HD Helmet HERO camera for his winning video.

Second place went to Curtis Perrin for his “Pumptrack” video, a cool short film with good editing, fun-looking riding, and some creative angles. Curtis is the proud new owner of a Giro Remedy helmet for his film.

Huge thanks to those who submitted videos and everyone who came out to Downbeat to support Trips for Kids Vancouver. This year we raised in excess of $10,000 due in large part to your generosity. Overall the event was a huge success and makes us realize that we are fortunate to have the partnerships and support from local businesses, throughout the bike industry and from individuals who believe in Trips for Kids and what we are trying to do.

Thanks!
Trips for Kids Vancouver

Tuesday, June 28, 2011 - Outdoor Gear Canada (OGC), Canada's premier supplier of premium cycling brands, is expanding its Montréal warehouse with a 36,000 square feet addition scheduled for completion later this summer.

"We've been operating at or above full capacity for the past year and have been renting satellite warehouses for several months now," said Jean Cloutier, OGC's Vice-President, Operations & Finance.

OGC's head office and warehouse are LEED (silver) - certified. The additional space will be built to the same LEED criteria used in the construction of the main facility five years ago.
