Toronto International Bicycle Show Awards

Outdoor Gear Canada (OGC)  has won the Best Exhibit Award (Manufacturers) for the 2nd consecutive year at the 2011 Toronto International Bicycle Show as well as the first-ever Greenest Exhibitor Contest awarded by Exhibition Place which hosted the annual consumer show. 



OGC’s award-winning booth featured the three bike brands distributed by the company, BMC, Intense and Opus as well as the new Joytrax child carrier it will begin distributing this Spring. 

The Greenest Exhibitor Award was based on polling of attendees as well as judging by Exhibition Place. 

“We are pleased to congratulate Outdoor Gear Canada on winning the Greenest Exhibitor Contest.  The award shows the evolution of the GREENSmart program which now empowers exhibitors to operate in a sustainable manner while at the show. It also speaks highly of The Toronto International Bicycle Show for working closely with their exhibitors and producing award winning results,” said Arlene Campbell, General Manager Sales & Events, Exhibition Place. 

This year’s show was held March 4 -6 and drew thousands of visitors. It is Canada’s largest consumer bicycle show.

Sandau : 2011 Canada Games

I was in Halifax Nova Scotia, the host city for the 2011 Canada Winter Games. This being my second Canada Games, these games sure lived up to the standard set by the previous games in 2007. My races at here went fairly well for the most part, and I was able to take home two gold and one bronze.

My first race was a 10km individual skate race; a bit shorter distance than what I'm used to. The trails at the Martock Ski Centre (an hour bus ride from Halifax) aren't as challenging as other venues, and with only a few climbs, every second would count. By the end of the race, I was able to secure the gold medal, but only by a slim two-second margin over second, and four seconds from third. Not a bad start to the week!

Less than a kilometre to the finish, which was awkwardly positioned at the bottom of a downhill.

My next two races were the skate sprint, something I'm still trying to figure out, and the 15km classic race. I ended the sprint day in 8th, missing out on the A-Final due to a poor finishing lane selection.

The race I was looking forward to all week was the 15km mass start classic race, a long enough distance to gradually wear skiers down. Right from the start, it was myself and two of my other Albertan teammates fighting for the podium positions. Just like in the first race, it was a tough course for dropping guys, and after two unsuccessful attempts on the largest climb, I finished 3rd in a sprint to the line. On the podium, it was an awesome sight to see an Alberta sweep of the medals!

There was plenty of time to check out Halifax while I wasn't skiing. Most of the athletes were staying in a few hotels right on the shore front in downtown Halifax, so there were limitless things to do. Whether it was a night out tasting Halifax's own lobsters, or checking out Great Big Sea perform live, I'd have to say its a pretty cool place to be.

The last race of the games was the team relay, something that really fosters some "friendly" rivalries among skiers. In 2007, Team Alberta lost the gold medal to Ontario and it has been our goal since to take it back. After some strong results by the men, we were entering as the favourites for the win, and that's exactly what we did. With a sizeable lead into the finishing straight, our anchor was able to grab the flag and ski it in. An awesome end to the week, that's for sure.

After returning back to Canmore, that concludes my travel for most of the season. I have a week to recover from what has felt like non-stop traveling (to Estonia, back to Canmore, then to Ottawa, back to Canmore, off to Halifax and finally back in Canmore in the span of 1 1/2 months) before the next set of races, our National Championships taking place in Canmore on the 12th. Looking forward to it!

I am often annoyed how everyone in Los Angeles swings off the nuts of Kobe Bryant, so I guess I annoy myself how much I love the guys at OGC ) our canadian distributor), especially my man Olivier Laprade who is the Intense brand manager for canada. This guy is an epic shredder on a DH bike, loves this sport and is really good at his job. Ok, enough swinging.

BMC Mountainbike Racing Team ready for action

The Swiss bike manufacturer BMC has now also been involved in professional mountain bike sport since January 1. The BMC Mountainbike Racing Team has set its sights on World Cup glory with a top international line-up. Established names such as the reigning German Champion Moritz Milatz and the former road racer Alexandre Moos are at the vanguard of a young team with ambitious goals. 

More than virtually any other brand, BMC is inseparably associated with professional cycle racing. The Grenchen-based company has long been a synonym for success in competitive road cycling. In 2010 the BMC Racing Team notched up impressive successes with World Champion Cadel Evans in the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. The Swiss company is now rediscovering its origins – mountain bike sport – and pinning its hopes on a long-term, deep-rooted team strategy.

“Our mountain bikes have been of a world-class standard for years. We now want to consolidate and refine our product development work with feedback from professional cross country sport, and of course demonstrate our expertise,” remarked Mike Hürlimann, CEO of BMC Trading AG. “The BMC Mountainbike Racing Team is the tip of the iceberg of our long-term involvement in mountain bike sport. We want that involvement to be an enduring partnership, so as well as the two Swiss teams Fischer and Texner we have also set up a U23 US Development Team to offer riders prospects also at junior or development level. Anyone who races on a BMC should do so in the reassuring knowledge that with the right performance, they can look forward to a professional career with us,” added Frank Schreiner, Head of Marketing at BMC.

The five-man team is embarking on its first season under the sporting leadership of Alexandre Moos. “It is a gigantic prospect for me to be able to participate in shaping the commitment to mountain biking for BMC. My experience as a professional cyclist is bound to help the young riders,” explained Moos. David Chassot will be in charge of its management.

The 2008 Olympic athlete Moritz Milatz is looking forward to wearing the BMC shirt. “For me, the BMC team is an ideal group with the right background. Living in Freiburg, I am also very close and will be able to integrate myself well. After being plagued by injury in 2010, I am truly motivated to give it my all in 2011. The materials and the environment are perfect.” The team’s other riders include Patrik Gallati, U23 World Cup runner-up and European Championship runner-up, and Julien Taramarcaz. Balz Weber will join Alex Moos in the Marathon. Their first joint race wearing BMC Mountainbike Racing Team colors will take place at the end of March in South Africa in the toughest mountain bike race in the world, the Cape Epic.

The team will be competing on the BMC models Teamelite 01 (hardtail) and fourstroke 01 (full suspension), which hit the trail with BMC’s supreme quality standards of trailblazing innovations.

Depuis le 1er janvier, le fabricant de vélo suisse BMC s'engage également dans le VTT professionnel. Forte de coureurs de pointe de diverses nationalités, l'équipe BMC Mountainbike Racing Team s'attaque à la Coupe du monde. Des noms établis comme ceux du champion allemand en titre Moritz Milatz ou de l'ex-professionnel sur route Alexandre Moos constituent le fer de lance d'une équipe jeune aux objectifs ambitieux.

Rarement une autre marque n'aura été aussi liée au cyclisme professionnel que BMC. L'entreprise de Granges est depuis longtemps synonyme de succès dans le cyclisme sur route. En 2010, l'équipe BMC Racing Team a convaincu par des victoires remportées par le Champion du monde Cadel Evans au Tour de France et au Giro d'Italia. Maintenant, les Suisses veulent renouer avec leurs racines, le VTT, et misent sur une stratégie d'équipe solide, orientée sur le long terme.

"Depuis plusieurs années, nos VTT sont au top de la production mondiale. Nous voulons maintenant consolider et raffiner le développement de nos produits sur la base des commentaires des professionnels du cross country, et bien entendu démontrer notre compétence", explique Mike Hürlimann, CEO de BMC Trading AG. "L'équipe BMC Mountainbike Racing Team n'est que la pointe de l'iceberg de notre engagement à long terme dans le VTT. Nous voulons inscrire cet engagement dans la durabilité et avons donc, outre les deux équipes suisses Fischer et Texner, également créé une équipe U23, US Development Team, afin de toujours donner des perspectives aux coureurs, également au niveau de la relève et du développement. Quiconque roule aujourd'hui avec un BMC doit avoir la certitude, à la condition de fournir de bonnes performances, d'être promu avec nous comme pro", ajoute Frank Schreiner, chef marketing chez BMC.

L'équipe composée de cinq coureurs entame sa première saison sous la direction sportive d'Alexandre Moos. "C'est pour moi une perspective enthousiasmante que de pouvoir contribuer à l'engagement de BMC en compétition de VTT. Mon expérience du sport professionnel sera certainement d'une grande aide pour les jeunes coureurs", déclare Alexandre Moos. Le management est assuré par David Chassot.

Ancien participant des Jeux Olympiques de 2008, Moritz Milatz se réjouit de défendre les couleurs de BMC. "Pour moi, l'équipe BMC est un groupe idéal avec le bon milieu. Ayant mon domicile à Fribourg, je suis, en plus, vraiment tout près d'eux et je vais pouvoir m'investir à bon escient. Après avoir eu la malchance de me blesser en 2010, je déborde de motivation pour donner le meilleur de moi-même en 2011. Le matériel et l'environnement sont les meilleurs que l'on puisse imaginer." Parmi les autres coureurs de l'équipe, on compte Patrik Gallati, Vice-champion du monde U23 et Vice-champion d'Europe, ainsi que Julien Taramarcaz. Balz Weber prendra avec Alex Moos le départ au marathon. Ils disputeront leur première course commune sous les couleurs de BMC Mountainbike Racing Teams en Afrique du Sud à la fin mars, lors de la course de VTT la plus dure au monde, la Cape Epic.

L'équipe roule avec les modèles BMC Teamelite 01 (hardtail) et fourstroke 01 (suspension complète), qui portent de l'avant les plus sévères normes de qualités de BMC en matière d'innovations pionnières.

Pouliot-Cavanagh : 3e du Grand Prix NorAm 2011

C'est avec un total de 4 médailles que je complète le circuit de la coupe NorAm 2011, terminant au 3ième rang cumulatif au Grand Prix !

Ces dernières compétitions m'ont toutefois été une montagne russe, principalement pour l'événement qui se tenait à Val-Saint-Côme les 21-22 février dernier. La piste était très belle, mais les conditions étaient aussi bien durcies suite à la pluie tombée quelques jours auparavant. Cette piste m'a rapidement réveillée quelques légères blessures des compétitions précédentes, et je me devais de minimiser mon volume d'entraînement pour ne pas empirer les douleurs. Malgré tout, j'avais un solide ski en entraînement et je suis partie bien confiant pour la compétition.

J'ai pris la première position suite à la qualification de la première journée, mais je n'ai pas été en mesure de garder le rythme pour le reste de l'événement. Je me sentais limité par mon corps et cela me déstabilisait de ne pas pouvoir skier à mon 100%. Je terminerai en 7ième position pour cette journée et en 8ième position le lendemain pour l'étape des duels. Enfin, je suis un peu déçu de ces résultats, mais après réflexion, je crois avoir compris comment faire face à ce type de situation si c'était à recommencer.

Ensuite, nous nous sommes dirigés le jour suivant pour la Finale NorAm qui a eu lieu en fin de semaine dernière (26-27 février) à Killington, dans l'état du Vermont. Cela ne laissait pas grand temps de repos avant la compétition, mais j'ai établi une nouvelle stratégie avec mon entraîneur pour bien performer à cette dernière.  Au bonheur de tous les skieurs, nous avons eu droit à deux belles bordées de neige avant et durant la course, ce qui a offert d'excellentes conditions à la piste.

Pour l'étape de bosses en simple, ce fut toute une journée pour l'Équipe Nationale alors qu'on a effectué ce qui semble être une première pour notre équipe sur le circuit NorAm. Sur les 5 membres qui étaient présents à cette course, nous nous sommes emparés des quatre premières positions ! Pour ma part, je suis monté sur la deuxième marche du podium, le partageant ainsi avec mes coéquipiers Eddie Hicks et Marc-Antoine Gagnon, sans oublier Arnaud Laurin Landry qui était tout près.

Le lendemain était une épreuve de duels pour conclure le circuit. Ces duels m'auront permis de repousser mes limites, et de récolter une troisième médailles d'argent sur ce circuit cette saison. J'ai eu de solides duels, mais lors de mon dernier affrontement, j'ai eu du trouble à l'atterrissage de mon premier saut contre l'américain Bradley Wilson, lui cédant la victoire.

Somme toute, je me vois satisfait de ma saison sur le circuit NorAm, alors que j'ai été chercher mes premières médailles sur ce circuit, soit une médaille d'or et trois d'argent. Cette série de résultats me placera en 3ème position pour le Grand Prix NorAm 2011. De plus, avec mes résultats de mes premières Coupe du Monde en début de saison ainsi que ceux du circuit NorAm, j'ai récemment su que j'étais invité pour la prochaine Coupe du Monde et peut-être même à terminer ma saison sur ce circuit. Celle-ci se tiendra en Suède et comprendra deux évènements, soit une de bosses en simple le 11 mars et des duels pour le 12. Suite à cette course, je devrais être en mesure de me diriger en Norvège la semaine suivante pour participer à la course finale de ce circuit pour cette saison, qui aura lieu le 20 mars.

Just finished up a week filming at a remote resort in Montana called Lost Trail. Had a great time and got some good shots with Toy Soldier Productions that I'm excited about, although weather wasn't ideal we still made it work and were succesful in the end.

I just wanted to pass along some photos from a switch 540 on one of the backcountry jumps we hit, I'll have many more once the photographers send them to me, but here are two for now. One is just a still, and the other is the sequence from the same trick.
